Which ChatGPT model should I use for my business and for what?

GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 are on their way!

Cue sighs and groans as the product line up gets even longer. But saying that, at long last, Sam Altman has acknowledged that OpenAI’s product lineup really is too complicated and says that the company wants to do ‘a much better job’ simplifying its offerings. ‘We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,’ Altman says.

About time.

OpenAI has long needed to sort this out. The user should be able to just enter a prompt and the best model just be selected for you. Let’s hope that’s what’s coming.

But until then, here’s a summary to help you choose the best model for your task:

1. GPT-4o

Best for: General-purpose tasks, including text, audio, and image processing.

Purpose: Ideal for most prompts, especially those involving tools and vision.

Access: Available to all users.

2. GPT-4o Mini

Best for: Everyday tasks requiring speed and efficiency.

Purpose: Suitable for quick responses and general enquiries.

Access: Available to all users; free users reaching rate limits with GPT-4o are automatically switched to GPT-4o Mini.

3. GPT-4

Best for: Tasks requiring creativity and advanced reasoning.

Purpose: Excellent for generating detailed content and complex problem-solving.

Access: Available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users.

4. OpenAI o1

Best for: Complex problem-solving in research, strategy, coding, maths, and science.

Purpose: Designed to solve hard problems by spending more time ‘thinking’ before responding.

Access: Available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise users.

5. OpenAI o1 Mini

Best for: Faster responses for complex tasks.

Purpose: A smaller, quicker version of the o1 model, suitable for advanced reasoning tasks with reduced latency.

Access: Available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise users.

6. OpenAI o1 Pro Mode

Best for: Enhanced performance in complex problem-solving.

Purpose: An upgraded version of the o1 model that uses more computational power to provide better answers.

Access: Available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers.

7. OpenAI o3 Mini

Best for: Coding and advanced reasoning tasks.

Purpose: Offers a compelling combination of speed, efficiency, and flexibility, with strong coding and complex reasoning capabilities.

Access: Available to all users; free users have access with rate limits, while paid users have additional options, including the higher-performing o3 Mini High.

Despite the above, our advice to you is to try out all models available to you on your subscription to find out what they are good out for yourself. They will all surprise and frustrate you in equal measure at some point.
